Which FastPass+ Should I Choose?

Helping clients plan their trips is one of the highlights of being an agent with Guru Travel.  With so many choices in choosing resorts, dining, and now fastpass+, it can be overwhelming for travelers of all experience.

Selecting FastPass+

Seasoned Disney travelers will have a better guess of which fast passes are a better 'value' than others, but where to start?

Well, with the help of a handy list I found at TouringPlans.com I made recommendations for which I think are the better choices and which you can leave for someone who hasn't found this list (or had a great planner to advise them!!)

Magic Kingdom:

• Ariel's Grotto - Possibly worth it, not if doing Princess meals
• The Barnstormer - Anywhere from 10-45 minute waits - I would save FP+ for another attraction
• Be Our Guest Restaurant - Lunch FastPass - YES!! If you didn't get in 180 days out (which happened to me in November), this is a GREAT option!
• Big Thunder Mountain Railroad - Yes
• Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin - Rarely a wait during non-crowded times
• Celebrate the Magic - NO. This is a show on the Castle before Wishes - both worth it, but you don't need reserve seating
• Dumbo the Flying Elephant - NO - the indoor playground makes the fast pass unnecessary!
• Enchanted Tales with Belle - YES. lines build quickly
• The Haunted Mansion - Eh - rarely a long wait and there is a fun graveyard to walk around!
• it's a small world - Again, rarely a longer than 20 minute wait
• Jungle Cruise - Not worth wasting a fp+ on! fun if no line if you're up for groan huor
• Mad Tea Party - NEVER a wait. lots of fun with little kids, but no need for FP
• The Magic Carpets of Aladdin - It's dumbo but on carpets. we've never actually been on it b/c waits are ridiculous, but it's literally the exact same ride
• Main Street Electrical Parade - No need for a special spot. If you want a great viewing area, stand in Town Square near the entrance of the park
• The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh - Good interactive queue to keep kids busy while you wait
• Mickey's PhilharMagic - Never a line
• Monsters, Inc. Laugh Floor - Rarely a line
• Peter Pan's Flight - Long lines all day - We usually ride this first to avoid any lines!
• Pirates of the Caribbean - Rarely long lines
• Princess Fairytale Hall: Meet Cinderella and a Visiting Princess  - Skip if you're doing a Princess Meal
• Princess Fairytale Hall: Elsa and Anna - If you want to meet them, YES.
• Princess Fairytale Hall: Meet Rapunzel and a Visiting Princess - Skip if you're doing a Princess Meal
• Seven Dwarfs Mine Train - YES or - ride it first thing in the a.m.
• Space Mountain (44")- Yes
• Splash Mountain (40") - Yes unless it's raining or cold outside!
• Tomorrowland Speedway - My boy LOVES this, but with a normal wait time of 10-20, there may be better attractions to spend FP+ on
• Town Square Theater Mickey Mouse Meet and Greet - MUST DO attraction but we've often seen 5-10 minute waits during the day
• Under the Sea: Journey of the Little Mermaid  - Yes
• Wishes Nighttime Spectacular - Absolutely see the show, but I wouldn't buy into a special area!

Choose 1 from Group A and 2 from Group B

Group A

• IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth  - Special viewing area not needed
• Maelstrom (FASTPASS and FastPass+) - Not with only 1 from this group! 
• Soarin' (FASTPASS and FastPass+)  YES OR
• Test Track (FASTPASS and FastPass+) YES
• Get Soarin' for 11 am - start at Test Track at 9. Do Test Track then head to other side of Future World for The Seas, Turtle Talk, Living with the Land, Soarin - there is a great counter service restaurant in the Land Pavilion.

Group B 

• Captain EO - Michael Jackson 3d video from 1984 or something. If you like MJ, go for it. It will hopefully be retired soon. For the second time.
• Epcot Character Spot - Yes - if you choose Test Track FP+ and head to Soarin and that side of the park first thing, you can stop in before using your Test Track FP+, so schedule accordingly, as the Character Stop is located near Innoventions in the middle of the park.
• Journey Into Imagination With Figment - While we like Figment, we are usually in there and have a car to ourselves.  Or times, an entire ride (3 cars) to ourselves.  No.
• Living with the Land -  This one gets overflow from Soarin', but rarely has any wait.. 
• Mission: SPACE Green -If you like to feel nauseated
• Mission: SPACE Orange - If you like feeling really nauseating
• Spaceship Earth - don't need fastpass, just don't do this during peak times - not first, not noon.
• The Seas with Nemo and Friends - No need
• Turtle Talk with Crush - Possibly the best option in Group A

Hollywood Studios

I find scheduling at Hollywood Studios difficult due to figuring out show times versus touring.  I highly recommend using Touring Plans to help you figure out where to go when.

Group A

• Beauty and the Beast - Live on Stage - I don' tthink you need it
• Fantasmic! - Great fireworks show. If you want to see this with guaranteed seating, consider grabbing dinner first and doing the Fantasmic Dinner Package
• The Great Movie Ride - Not usually needed
• Rock 'n' Roller Coaster - Start the day here if want to ride. This is THE best coaster. Or one of the best at WDW.  It's over in about 45 seconds, so always frustrating to wait for, but a great place to start!
• Toy Story Mania! - YES

Group B

• Disney Junior - Live on Stage! - Plan accordingly with show time, queue up 10 minutes prior 
• Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular! - Not needed
• Lights, Motors, Action! Extreme Stunt Show - I'm not sure the theatre is ever filled
• Muppet*Vision 3D - No wait, other than waiting for the next show
• Star Tours: The Adventures Continue - Probably the best option
• The American Idol Experience
• The Comedy Warehouse Holiday Special - Seasonal and rare
• The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror - Often 20 minutes or less wait, but I would still probably get this one
• Voyage of the Little Mermaid - Not needed

Animal Kingdom

• DINOSAUR (40") - This ride scares me. Seriously, I find it frightening. That being said, if you like to be scared, have at it.
• Expedition Everest  (44") - Yes - Amazing coaster 
• Festival of the Lion King - Great show
• Finding Nemo - The Musical - Good stage show
• It's Tough to Be a Bug! - Scary show
• Kali River Rapids (38") - Yes. But, you will get wet.

Monster Jam!

On Friday, January 24th, my husband and my 4 year old son had an incredible bonding day - they had an impromptu "take your child to work day" followed with an exciting dinner (if you haven't had guacamole from Rosa Mexicano, you are totally missing out)... and then the winner of all winners:

 Monster Jam!

Okay - maybe not all boys are into monster trucks, but they have been one of Noah's interests for YEARS.  I'm not sure how it started - you tube maybe?  We have watched more than a few Netflix specials our clips on You Tube and he has always loved it.  

They sent me pictures frequently, which I shared on Instagram - they couldn't even come close to the excitement that my boys truly experienced.

The boys had fantastic seats with a perfect view of the arena - right by the starting line for the monster truck races. 

So - a monster truck show is split into sections - Monster Jam isn't just a show - it's a series of competitions.  They have a wheelie competition where drivers battle to get the most vertical - they night my boy went, a truck named Crushstation (which we were familiar with thanks to a Monster Truck book we bought at a school book fair a couple of years ago) won that competition!

Next came racing - straight line racing - with a few cars to go over plus a mound of dirt - it's not a long race, just a competition.  Noah's favorite, Man of Steel, had a hard time getting started, but that didn't stop him from getting a Man of Steel plush for both him and his brother (thanks to his daddy's credit card!).

During a monster truck break, they had dirt bikes/atvs out there - and though they didn't really do much to peak Noah's interest, he couldn't actually take his eyes off of the arena.

The final competition of the Monster Jam show is a freestyle competition.  Each driver has 60 seconds to show off their best donuts, big airs, wheelies, and cross threads.  Noah is still talking about the monster truck, Bounty Hunter, that got stuck during the freestyle portion and had to be towed away by a tractor!

Let me just say - we enjoyed Disney on Ice but leaving that show, Noah was exhausted and tired.  Fighting a 7 pm show tends to be a bit too late for my little guy, but this show, which started at 7:30, kept him engaged and interested the whole time.  He is already asking to go see it again - hopefully next time they come around, we can bring his 'baby' brother.

But - make SURE to bring ear plugs.  You'll notice in the video - it is incredibly loud!  You can buy them in the arena for probably $20 and there were tons of people outside of the Verizon Center selling them for a major profit - but you can pick them up at the drugstore for less.  They are a Monster Jam must have!

This show is a MUST for little boys - I know mine loved it and I hope yours will, too!

Book Early!

Planning Walt Disney World vacations seem to be different than any other vacation taken.

When you book a cruise, you plan what days you go where and look into land options - maybe swim with the dolphins or visit Mayan ruins - but dining is mostly standard or easy to make once you get on the ship.

Disney Cruise Line

Adventures by Disney is another travel option - that I hope to some day experience - in which planning is done completely ahead of time... by someone else!  They do ALL of the work so you just show up and enjoy!

Walt Disney World vacations require so much planning that I'm fairly certain that the reason so many people don't like WDW is because they under planned.  Yes, that is VERY easy to do.

Reasons to Book Early

Reserve a room before the discounts

When you book with me (or any qualified agent - I, of course, recommend Guru Travel) - we 'babysit' your reservation and apply discounts the same day they are offered to save you money! 

Lock in a rate before price inreases

Price increases are inevitable.  Will they happen in June? August? One or twice in each year?  If you wait for the 'just in case' room discount, you may end up paying 5-7% more in ticket prices!  You lock in your rate when you book - prices can go down, but can't go up, unless you decide to upgrade!

**I can't guarantee discounts will happen, but the chances good there will be some available**

More Dining Opportunities

Not as many Disney restaurants are as popular as the Be Our Guest Restaurant.  Maybe the meal inside the other castle - Cinderella's Royal Table, or the exclusive and adult only Victoria and Albert Restaurant at Disney's Grand Floridian Resort.  It may seem crazy to make Advanced Dining Reservations 6 months out, but trust me, many of the popular ADR's are gone fast!

Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique

Do you want your little princesses to have their dream makeover?  The Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique, located inside Cinderella Castle (there is a second location at Downtown Disney), books up almost as quickly as the Be Our Guest Restaurant!  If you want to guarantee these special experiences, it is best to book them as close to your 180 day reservation window as possible!

**If you miss out on BBB, try the Harmony Barber Shop or Pirates League for another great experience - or send the boys there when the girls are getting all dolled up!**

My Disney Experience

Now, everyone staying on property receives a Magic Band to use instead of a Key to the World Card.  Room key, park ticket, fast pass, memory maker, credit card, dining plan - it is ALL on your wrist.  But, to receive one that isn't plain grey, you need to log in to MyDisneyExperience.com to customize your Magic Band, link your reservations, tickets (if buying seperately), and continue planning

Fast Pass+

Your magic band will be your fast pass ticket - no more paper fast passes.  Your 3 a day (yes, only 3 - I will cover that topic later) can be chosen 60 days out - and while we had few problems changing them on the go, if you're hoping for a specific time of Toy Story Midway Mania, you might want to book that sooner rather than later!

My Disney Side

Welcome to those of you joining me from My Dreams of Disney and those of you just hopping aboard. I am the 3rd stop on our Magical Blogorail.

I'm pretty sure that all Disney-people have a Disney side.  That little bit (or more) of our personalities and traits that make the non-Disney people say "seriously?" or assume that we're immature and just strange.  But, this phenomenon of Disney addiction is more common than you can imagine and Disney is helping those that aren't quite sure what their Disney Side is with their new campaign -

To me - I'm a bit of everything.

I love to linger on Main Street and sing along with the Dapper Dan and Characters of Main Street, U.S.A.

But, I'm also the same person who gets stuck in the Hub singing and dancing every single time I hear Move it!  Shake it!! Celebrate it!!  That darned Miley Cyrus song is catchy...

I've never been one to wear ears or hats, though the temptation is growing, but my parks-clothing collection keeps growing for every trip.  I usually prefer the more subtle Disney touches, like the small, misplaced Mickey on the matching shirts my husband, friends, and I all got:

I have no problem making the boys go all out Mickey :)

At home, my Disney side mostly comes out in conversation - I seem to make the simplest conversations revolve around Disney - and my newest and most favorite purse, a Harvey's Seat Belt Bag from my husband - helps keep those conversations going.... and my credit card (Disney Visa)... and my runDisney stickers on my car.... and my job...  

It's subtle, right?  Okay, not so much.

So, it seems that my #DisneySide may be encroaching my every day life.  With 2 Thomas Kincaide paintings, pictures from our trips all over our house, Disney Travel Agent Collateral stealing the walls in my office, Disney specials on my DVR - Disney is everywhere. 

Disney brings my family and myself so much joy that it's no surprise it's encroaching in my daily life.  I share it constantly and always thinking about how it may grow in the future!

For quite some time, I've spent time revealing some of the hidden tributes that the Disney Imagineers leave for those who came before them - from the Windows of Main Street to the Tombstones at the Haunted Mansion.  These tributes are all over the place, if you simply stop to look!

I found a new one on our November trip - this time in the queue for The Jungle Cruise (technically it was the Jingle Cruise, but as the only difference was a santa hat and a few different jokes, I'll stick with the original title).

Harper Goff, Legendary Disney Imagineer, was born in Fort Collins, Colorado in 1911.  He was a concept artist at Disneyland, starting back in 1951 and is credited for much of Main Street, U.S.A. and the Jungle book.

Harper Goff stayed on with Disney much beyond Disneyland - he is credited for designing much of the World Showcase, including the Japan, Italy, and UK pavilions!

Harper Goff also has his own window at Disneyland (probably at WDW - not sure if I have that one) and has been given some love with the updated Haunted Mansion, too!

with Preschoolers 2014

For the past several years, Lisa Battista has been helping families travel to Walt Disney World with preschoolers.  As a blogger with similar goals, I see the need and use for such help in book form and Lisa has brought us this again in 2014.  

Unlike other books (which I love, use, and recommend - but may overwhelm the average reader), this book has great succinct descriptions of Disney Resorts and Attractions with a focus on how children may relate to them.  You get all of the information you need but in 200 pages instead of 1000.  Many of the descriptions are also followed with tips, such as this one found with a review of Disney's Caribbean Beach resort:

"Your little pirates will enjoy the themed pirate rooms at Disney's Caribbean Beach Resort. These specially decorated rooms contain pirate beds and other custom details to immerse your family in the pirate experience  You will pay about a $55 premium per night to stay in these rooms and they are a distance from the main resort building."'

I personally love the recreation aspect of the book which breaks down so many attractions and places that I haven't experienced for myself yet, such as mini-golf, bowling, carriage and wagon rides, and many others that children may love, yet the average guest may know nothing about!

This book is also great that it has preschooler-specific packing lists, children specific park maps, tips on child safety, and an easy index to find specific topics.

Kid-Cot

Think that EPCOT isn't kid friendly?  Well, I think everyone has had that concern, which EPCOT has addressed in several different ones.  One of the most apparent are the World Showcase Kid Cot stations.  You may have heard of them, but have you ever stopped to appreciate them?

Located somewhere at every pavilion in the World Showcase, you’ll find a station waiting children of all ages.  These are basically coloring stations – but sometimes in a sensory overloaded vacation like Walt Disney World, taking 5-10 minutes to find a regular activity is nice. 

Markers of all different colors are available along with pictures of Duffy and Agent P for the children to choose from.  There are cast members at each station from the Pavilion country stamping the paddles the pictures are stamped on.  In the majority of pavilions, the cast members engage with the children to ask their names and then write their name in the native language on the back of the paddle.

Another option is to purchase (or make before you travel) apassport to be stamped and signed in each of the pavilions. 

They may not seem like much, but whenever we are touring the Pavilions, Noah loves to stop and take a coloring break (and he’s only one to color for a minute or two anyway).  Avoid the rain, grab a treat, enjoy your miniature permanent World’s Fair and appreciate the kid cots for the little break that they are!

Virtual Baby Shower

Welcome to those of you joining me from Disney on Wheels and those of you just hopping aboard. I am the Final stop on our Special Edition Magical Blogorail.

As bloggers, we find ourselves connecting with friends all over the country - the world, even.  And, while we can't be there to share major lifetime events, it's fun to host virtual events - like this Alice in Wonderland themed baby shower for our very own, PT Disneyland!

As a mom of 2 boys, it's always fun to visualize outside the boy world of cars and even my beloved Mickey Mouse - and with this shower, we're contemplating the world of Alice in Wonderland.  And, while I wouldn't consider Alice a princess/girl movie, having the lead be a girl, by nature, makes it slightly more feminine.

Searching for Alice in Wonderland nursery ideas was fun - and easy! I took to my favorite idea spot: Pinterest (follow me!!) and found all sorts of wonderful Alice inspired ideas!

Now, I'm more of a simplistic designer, so I would choose a neutral, probably a light yellow, for the walls.  But, those neutrals are a great base for phenomenal decor, like this teapot chandelier found on Etsy:

Then, I would find some functional, yet creative furniture.  Like this bookshelf:

I couldn't find designer names on the first, but I believe the second is from a series of whimsical furnishings by Vincent Thomas Lemon.

And, then for some decorations, I would do a print or a series of these flowers - because I LOVE them!

To top the whole thing off, I would have to find this doorknob - which I've only seen on ebay and it cost well over $100, but still - how could I not have this?
